Knowing What Teachers Know

Abstract

"Bringing together much more developed theories of teacher knowledge with advances in assessment design provides an opportunity to develop measures of teacher knowledge that have value far more than simply being used for certification. Such assessments, precisely because they are rooted in practice, have the potential to dramatically influence how teachers are prepared and supported throughout their careers. Obviously, substantial design work needs to be carried out to use assessments of teacher knowledge with different purposes from what they have been traditionally used for. Finally, having measures of knowledge that are based on strong and explicit theories of practice provides rich opportunities to test and revise the assumptions that guide our theories of how teachers learn and how they help students learn."
